Laurie Brophy Memorial Challenge - An invite to challenge yourself, raise money for Llamau, and be a bit like Laurie!

Firstly, who was Laurie?

Laurence Brophy.. Laurie.. loved a challenge! Laurie wasn’t anything special in his eyes, he was an ex language teacher, not ex athlete or armed forces, but his efforts to stay young in his retirement grew into something truly inspirational. Laurie completed marathons in his 60's, in his 70's he completed several 250km foot races across the deserts of the world, and in his 80's he walked the Taff Trail, Offa's Dyke, cycled Lands End to John o' Groats and more.

As far as we know he was the OLDEST PERSON to cycle Lands End to John o' Groats aged 88!

Laurie died aged 90 in June 2022 of Oesophageal Cancer. He certainly did not go gentle into that good night. Laurie’s last challenge at age 89, was to climb the 3 Welsh peaks. He successfully climbed Snowdon on 17th September 2021 also sleeping rough to raise awareness of homelessness and money for Llamau.

Laurie was incredible, and to remember him and keep his values alive his family came up with the idea that others may like to be a little bit like Laurie in their own way by challenging themselves within their own limits.

How to take part -

Pick a challenge to complete around the date of 16.06.23

This could be anything that fits with Laurie's values of keeping fit, the environment and community.

So what about a litter pick?

A walk with friends?

Climb one of the beautiful Welsh Mountains? They come in lots of sizes for different fitness levels!

Cycle a part of the Taff Trail?

Plant some bee friendly plants in your garden? Or anything you've been fancying doing and haven't got round to, let this be your time to do that thing!

A bit about Llamau. Laurie was passionate about raising money over the years for young people with support needs and disabilities in order to give them a fair chance in life. Llamau provide support services and accommodation to young people in Wales who are at risk of homelessness or who are homeless from ages 14-25. They also provide accommodation and support to women who have experienced domestic abuse. With the generosity of his supporters he raised over £10,000 for Llamau and it would be wonderful if that generosity were to continue in his memory to keep these valuable and essential services going.
