Story

Hello friends of Project Riandu!

For the month of August this year I will be volunteering for a building project in the village of Riandu in central-Eastern Kenya. The UK-based charity supporting this project, the Peter Cowley Africa Trust, is one that I have been aware of and interested in for more than 7 years now on account of the Macnaughton family's leadership of its work. It's therefore especially exciting that I now have my own opportunity to contribute to the worthy efforts of this charity, which looks to work very much with local communities jointly on every ambitious target it sets.

The aim of this particular project is to build a fully-equipped secondary school for 200 deaf children in Riandu. The need for such an initiative was brought to the Peter Cowley Africa Trust's attention by the local Mothers Union. There are currently 71 primary schools for deaf children in Kenya, but only 5 secondary schools, none of which are in the Eastern province of the country. Mbeere, a nearby town, has a primary school for deaf children and we aim to establish secondary provision for that school.

It is a demanding project and its success will be reliant upon the shared enthusiasm, hard work, organisation and fundraising efforts of friends of the project both here and in Kenya itself. Each volunteer, myself included, has committed to a fundraising target of £1000 to facilitate the purchase of materials and resources for the school's building and future.

Please help me to help ensure the success of this fantastic project. Please note that all money donated will go direct to the project, and will not impact on the role I will have to play in the building of the school.

I canot thank you enough!

Kate
