Story

So rewind 6 months I was raising money for the hospice by doing a 3km santa dash. I was worried I wouldn't be able to do the whole 3km without stopping but I did. Since then I've been regularly running & saw this challenge.

100k your way... So I have all of June to do 100k distance. I must be mad! Once again I'm asking you to support me by sponsoring me or joining in the challenge. Here's why...

I am raising money to support St Richards Hospice for the amazing work they do.

As many of you know we lost Mick aka Grump back in November 2011.

Mick was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in August 2011. The disease has the lowest survival rate of almost any cancer. Mick went through treatment in hospital & was struggling to cope with the severe pain he was in.

Luckily he was taken to St Richards Hospice which was an instant blessing. Mick was happy & comfortable, it made a whole world of difference someone taking the time to listen to him, talk to him & give him the best care.

Mick made good progress with his pain management & did come home for a short while. Unfortunately his condition deteriorated & he was taken back to the hospice. It’s hard for a family to see a loved one leave their family home, but knowing how much Mick loved it & how well he was looked after was a huge comfort.

The care, privacy & dignity we were provided with was outstanding. We were able to all gather together with Mick in his own personal room. We were able to talk, laugh & enjoy our time together.

It’s all the little touches that makes this place so special for all of us. The patient food was an extensive menu with fresh flowers on a tray. Even the layout of the room was designed so well. The window is at bed height so patients can still see outside. There is a private patio for each room & double patio doors so patients can be wheeled out in their bed if required. There was no request no matter how big, small or random. Nothing was too much trouble.

After Mick passed away very peacefully the hospice’s care didn’t stop there. They were on hand to chat to us all as a family or individually. Their passion for people doesn’t end at the patient they also care a lot about the family.

If anyone hasn’t visited St Richards Hospice then I encourage you to do so on their open days. The building is clean, light & spacious, the gardens & pond are well maintained, all of the staff are friendly.

Fortunately many of you will never have to experience the hospice but I can promise you that if you are ever in that situation with your loved one this is the only place you would want to be. They are fantastic & do amazing work.

Please support me in raising money, there is no way we can ever repay the staff there but hopefully with your support we can help financial support their future.
