Story
I am running the London Marathon in April to raise money for a fantastic charity, the White Lodge Centre.
Having run a half marathon last year, the obvious next challenge was to commit to a full marathon. Those that know me will know that my runs usually involve regular pub / brunch / coffee stops to get me through, so running a full marathon (without wine stops) is going to be a huge challenge!
I am excited to be raising money for a very well-deserving charity where I have seen their work in action and how much of a difference they make to people's lives.
I have had a close connection with the White Lodge Centre from even before I was born as my Mum was a volunteer there while she was pregnant with me. She continued to fundraise for the Centre and took me along with her, from the age of four, to help when she did cookery demonstrations there.
A bit about the White Lodge Centre:
White Lodge provides services that enable those with a range of disabilities, their families and carers to lead fulfilling lives.
Our vision is "a world which is inclusive to all, regardless of ability"
We currently support over 2,500 individuals across Surrey and beyond through a diverse range of services for all ages and abilities.
We are based on a wonderful two acre site in Chertsey in three specialist buildings with great facilities and services for all ages, including: physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, a specialist nursery, hydrotherapy, holiday clubs, personal support in the home, short breaks (respite), fitness and rehabilitation and many activities such as trips out, art, baking, swimming, and much more.
Through individual assessments, our teams of highly experienced staff enable those with disabilities to reach their potential through tailored programmes.
It costs over £2.5 million a year and the costs are not fully met by statutory funding, so we rely on voluntary donations to maintain vital services and currently fundraise for over £560,000 per year. There are many ways to get involved in our work, including volunteering and fundraising or through community groups, schools and local businesses that can partner with us through a range of schemes and opportunities.
