Story
Running from Lewknor (Oxfordshire) to Avebury (Wiltshire) for Alzheimer’s Research UK because this great cause needs more support and publicity.
Hi all, thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On 9th July I will be running 100km in one day to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK. It will be my first ultra-race, which I'm sure will provide me with an exciting and challenging endurance event (and a very sore..... pair of legs!)
So, why Alzheimer's Research UK?
Dementia is a disease which affects everyone. We all know someone that is suffering from it or we have lost because of it.
It is the leading cause of death in England (accounting for 11.6% of all deaths). Given the projected trends in population ageing, the number of people with dementia is expected to increase.
Dementia is cruel and unrelenting - it is a progressive brain disease which gets worse over time. It gradually strips people of their ability to function and feel in control of what's happening around them.
As a befriending volunteer with Age UK, I have supported people with early stages of the disease. I have had conversations with sufferers and have watched them go from being confused, to suspicious to frustrated all in one conversation. It is heart breaking.
Where does the money go?
Alzheimer's Research UK and is the UK's leading dementia and Alzheimer's disease research charity. They fund ground-breaking research to find a cure and improve diagnosis and care. They also campaign for change by pushing the Government to address the ongoing issues that people with dementia and their families face.
If you can spare anything, please do. All your kind support and continued generosity goes a long way.
Thank you!
