Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Myself, Ross and Sharon will be running the Edinburgh Marathon on 24th May 2014 to raise money for “The Jamie King Urology Cancer Research Fund" based at the Western General Hospital. We are raising money for this life changing research program because of the work they did to help, treat, extend and maintain my Dads’ quality of life.
Dad was diagnosed with kidney cancer in September 2005 and underwent surgery to have his kidney removed on 23rd October 2005. Shortly afterwards Dad took part in a trial from a new life enhancing treatment headed by Dr. McLaren. Unfortunately Dad only stayed cancer free until 2008 when secondary cancer was found in his brain. Of Course Dad took most of this in his stride and remained his usual active outgoing self. Dad never let cancer get him down and strived to live his life; he would never miss a chance to wind Mum up, be there for Kirsty and her boys or get out in the boat with me. Dad was nicknamed Grandad by his team at work which is a very good reflection of his personality and caring character; he was never one to let a joke go past him! Dad lived his life to the last and this fund could help others do the same.
The trial Dad took part in made a significant difference to him and many others. When the secondary kidney cancer was discovered in his brain, Dad received the trial drug (Sutent) instead of the placebo which he had been taking. This had an instant impact on Dad's health and dramatically extended his life whilst maintaining its quality. The research this program does is not only life changing but it brings hope to both cancer patients and their families.
Our family, like most, has been hit by cancer many times, over recent years Gibbon men have been taken from us far too soon: Uncle Robert, Uncle Harry, Dad and Dad cousin Henry all around the age of 60.
My family are all pulling together to do our part whether it’s the marathon, swimming 250milles or cycling from John O’Groats to Lundin Links! Please help to support us – Dad always tried to help others when he could – support us to help carry on in his memory. xxx
