A few years ago I tragically lost my Grandma to pancreatic cancer. At the time the family knew barely anything about the awful cancer and the effect it would have on her. For someone who was not overweight not a smoker or a drinker it came as a huge shock to the family. We heartbreakingly watched her deteriorate at a fast rate and we unfortunately lost her a few months after diagnosis. She was such a huge part of my life so losing her was probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to go through.
For anyone, a cancer diagnosis is a difficult and life changing moment. For people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer it is especially devastating, as it is the deadliest common cancer with a prognosis that has barely changed in decades. It is tough to diagnose, hard to treat and tough to survive.
* 10,000 people are diagnosed each year – which is the equivalent to 27 people every day
* 1 in 4 people facing a pancreatic cancer diagnosis will die within a month and 3 in 4 within a year
* Receives just 2% of the annual UK cancer research budget - three times less than breast cancer
Research investment works; survival rates for the four most common cancers have improved dramatically, but it takes time. We must see the same progress for pancreatic cancer. Support from you will help fund vital research into early diagnosis and new treatments to transform the future for people facing the toughest of cancers. Pancreatic Cancer UK would be delighted to invite some of our staff to visit a research laboratory where they will be able to see the scientists in action and understand how their fundraising is contributing to the future of pancreatic cancer research
