Story
I am walking Hadrian's Wall path in my 60th year (starting on 17th May,
the day after my 59th birthday!). As well as being a personal challenge, as a trustee and long-time supporter of Friends of Conakry Refugee School, I would really like to raise at least £800. I chose this amount as I will be walking for 84 miles over 8 days, and to produce school meals for 500 pupils at Conakry Refugee School costs £100 per day, so each day of walking would represent meals for 500 children.
£40 feeds a child for a year, £10 feeds 50 children for a day
Many students at CRS do not get a proper meal at home every day. FCRS funds a School Meals Programme to ensure that every pupil gets a meal every school day. Attendance has risen dramatically since the Meals Programme was started and teachers have found children’s concentration has improved. No school meal often means the poorest children don’t attend school and those who do could go hungry. CRS Principal comments:
“Thanks to FCRS for making it possible for the children to have hope, to have a nice meal while at school learning. Having food at school has enabled many more children to attend. Their families rest in peace that their children are being fed each day. This helps them concentrate in class..."
The charity still needs to raise over £10,000 to cover school meals for this academic year. £800 (or more!) will go a little way towards this target.
For those who are not familiar with FCRS, Conakry Refugee School caters for around 500 primary and secondary aged children, and is based in Conakry, Guinea, West Africa. The school was founded in 1993 by a group of parents who had fled with their families from the brutal civil wars in neighbouring countries. Friends of Conakry Refugee School support the school by providing a hot meal, paying fees for vulnerable children, paying rent on school buildings, funding exam fees and essential PSHE classes and supplementing staff wages to retain a consistently good quality of teaching.
