This time last year I was doing a LOT of cycling in training for the London-to-Brighton bike ride. I took part in it last September -- 55 miles over one glorious Sunday, reaching the finish line just as the marshals were starting to pack away. It was an incredible experience and I was really happy that I raised more than £1700 for Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders).
I was going to make it a yearly thing but then a few months ago I injured myself in a *freak jogging accident* and ended up in June having to have hamstring avulsion surgery. I'm making a good recovery but there's no cycling for me this year, it's all about healing and strengthening and PRACTISING PATIENCE. I've learnt a lot, I can tell you. Anyway: instead of cycling to Brighton in September, I've set myself the goal of walking there over three days in December.
I'm looking forward to it, covering the distance will be satisfying and it's a good physical challenge (20 miles on day one, 20 miles on day two, 15 miles on day three), as well as an extra incentive to be disciplined with the physio (it's only a few weeks since I ditched the crutches and ventured further than my own garden). I'll follow the same route as last year, only this time I'll be on my own and without wheels :-)
Oh, and most importantly (because it's not all about me), I'm raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Because people with cancer and their families need all the support they can get. Thanks for making a donation, kind friends. I really appreciate it.
