From Kathryn:
Those of you who have known me for a while will be aware that I have completed a number of road races in the past, from a marathon to halfs to 10ks.
You may think another is no big deal... It is different this time though.
Last December my beautiful mother was diagnosed with a brain tumour and our lives changed in the blink of an eye.
There are no words to describe the strength that she has shown in the face of this disease. There are also no words to describe the emotional and physical turmoil that it has brought.
Zaid and I are running the Great North Run for the challenge but most importantly to raise money for the Brain Research Trust. This charity supports research into so many conditions, a number of which may have a personal place in your heart.
For us, for me, the most important thing is that BRT are carrying out specific research into the condition that my mother has.
Overall, brain tumour research is under-funded and therefore lags significantly behind other cancers. It is also a poorly publicised disease. For example, did you know that more people under 40 die of brain tumours than any other cancer? Or that brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of UK children?
Without research there can be no progress and no improvement in outcome, while incidence continues to increase year on year by 4%.
Please give generously to this charity, help them to change people's futures so that other families do not have to experience what we have.
Thank you so much. We'll run really fast!
From Zaid:
