For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to cycle from one end of the country to the other. I feel that it offers a great challenge especially as I am doing the event solo and unsupported. I also wanted to fundraise and chose the following two charities who will recieve all of my funds as I am privately funding the trip myself and aim to keep costs to a minimum by staying in fire stations throughout the country,
Over twenty years ago I lost my gran to cancer, and as a young child her death profoundly affected me and the rest of my family, unfortunately we were not aware of Macmillan Cancer Care and the help that they can provide. Just recently my neighbour has been diagnosed with leukamia and both him and his family are very grateful for the support and care he has recieved. After researching leukamia care I came across Macmillan and was surprised to see the level of work they do, having only been aware previously of the role of macmillan nurses. Instead Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer. They provide practical, medical and financial support and push for better cancer care.
We all know someone affected by cancer and Macmillan are the main charity that supports both the families and individuals through this terrible time.
As a fire fighter I am keen to support the fire fighters charity and decided to start my ride on September 11th 2010, this date is the 9th anniversary of the terrorist atrocity on the twin towers where nearly 350 fire fighters lost their lives. Every year, thousands of fire fighters are injured whilst protecting the public. Every 30 seconds in the UK, fire fighters are called to an incident, putting their lives on the line, and often sustaining physical injuries whilst carrying out their duties. The Fire Fighters Charity is here for all fire service personnel during their times of need, and assists thousands of individuals every year, by providing pioneering treatment and support services.
