Story
On 7 April I will be running in the Paris Marathon in aid of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help. I’d be grateful for your sponsorship in aid of this cause.
I have chosen this charity because it was one which was actively supported by my late father in his retirement where he undertook case work and was chairman of the fundraising committee of the NW London branch. When I lace up my running shoes and set out on my 26.2 miles I will therefore be sure that he would have been supportive of my efforts, even though he would think I’m a little bit mad and far too old for such a challenge!
If you’ve not heard of SSAFA before, the charity was founded in 1885 so has a long history of assisting serving personnel and ex-servicemen and women in their time of need. My father's role as case-worker involved sourcing help to enhance quality of life in a range of ways, which would include provision of practical, emotional and financial support.
As the number of fatalities and serious injuries sustained in Afghanistan continues to rise, SSAFA’s family support groups help relatives come to terms with loss and life-changing injuries. For example, their two Norton Homes allow injured troops to spend time with loved ones away from a hospital environment.
I made the decision to run in Paris for a Forces charity during the Great South Run in October, when I passed a soldier competing in army fatigues, boots and backpack. He was a young guy who looked like he was really struggling; it was a vivid reminder of what our troops do for us and give up for us.
I’d be so grateful if you would support them via the Marathon in Paris this spring.
Thank you.
