Story
So I’m (Kat) katherine and I’m 23 and I'm more of a house cat than an ally cat, for me the term house cat reminds me of a cat i had as a child called honey, she would sleep next to her biscuits, wake up claw the box open eat the entire contents and then have a nap, rarely leaving the house and if on the odd occasion she ever did do exercise it was to run away from my over excited dog, so yes although i would like to say i don’t claw open food boxes i am nearly on par with my long lost cat honey.
Usually i would say laziness runs in families, sadly i don’t have this excuse either. I am the black sheep of the family when it comes to being incredibly lazy i.e. I’m the only one. My twin brother could casually run a marathon as a de-stresser , my sister rides race horses and my big sister cycles hours a day and does yoga at the crack of dawn. whilst i prefer to do a little shopping sat on the sofa watching shoddy TV or documentaries about hospitals and yes eating is usually involved several times within in these “activities”.
I have just graduated from university as a children’s nurse (HURRAH)… finally have my life back so i decide, not sure why, that i need a new challenge that again will take over my life. As a write this i also am asking again WHY..
well this is why.. Im your classic girl that moans about her belly whilst eating a burger and drinking a pint on the sofa saying how unfair it is that my beloved siblings have six packs and are size 8′s…, now as glorious as that is for me i feel that for others around me it must all sound and look fairly ridiculous. So yes here i am on the sofa with a pint ( my last for many months.. BIG SAD FACE) looking down dreaming of that six pack and the self control; so here goes 40 weeks and 26 miles
So yes i have set out to run the London marathon 2015, which will be a big tick on my ever increasing bucket list. So as i have said i have studied for the last 4 years to become a children’s nurse, something i am very proud of achieving (something i would like to say has defiantly been more challenging than running a marathon could ever be, but i haven’t run it yet so i won’t jinx things). Being a children’s nurse has at times been incredibly emotionally difficult and i have met many families suffering with cancer, and seen how it effects families and of course their child. Anthony Nolan is an incredible charity that gives families who are effected from the many different types of blood cancer that glimmer of hope when the rest of the world seems to be closing in on them and all other hopes have faded. Its a charity which gets bone marrow donors from all over the world to donate a sample of DNA (spit) where they can match your proteins and DNA structure to patients whose last hope is a bone marrow transplant.
WHAT DOES BONE MARROW DO? They create stem cells, which can be made into many different types of cells for the body, So Stem cells are the body’s main cells. All other cells, tissue, organs and bones develop from stem cells. Blood stem cells are found in our bone marrow. Blood stem cells make lots of different blood cells, which all play a specific and vital part in keeping our blood healthy.
For example, blood stem cells can create: red blood cells, which carry oxygen around our body white blood cells, which help us fight infections. Our red and white blood cells don’t live very long. So we depend on stem cells to continuously make fresh blood cells to replace the ones that expire naturally. For us to be healthy, our blood stem cells need to produce exactly the right amount of each type of blood cell. If this carefully controlled process goes wrong, someone might develop a blood cancer like leukaemia or another blood disease or disorder. So by giving someone a bone marrow transplant you give the effected body the chance to rebalance and start creating a normal amount of blood cells, effectively beating the cancer and possibly getting rid of it for good.
Anthony Nolan could one day help save your parents life, your child’s life or indeed your own life. I have said i will raise £2000 by april next year for Anthony Nolan charity and will in due course be setting up a “just giving” page along with arranging balls and events to hopefully smash that target and some.
