Story
And then there were two.
Even after 40 years I find it hard to talk about Ann, my wee sister. In fact, my older sister Mary and I, rarely talk about Ann because it is just so painful. And yet, I don't want to forget. I don't want to forget how beautiful she was, how kind she was and how funny she was.
I wish I could have seen her grow up. Instead I saw her being hit by a car. I was 12, she was 11. My mum lost her youngest child. She fell apart. The doctor gave her valium, the doctor asked me and my older sister if we were ok. That was it. That was the support we got.
If there was a CHAS back then we could have had time to say goodbye, make memories and access support. I work for CHAS now, and it gives me comfort to know that I am helping families who have children that may not live into adulthood.
I am trekking the Sahara in memory of Ann. I am trekking the Sahara so I don't forget. I am trekking the Sahara for CHAS, so other families can access the support they need and live their best lives with their children, children who they may never see grow up, just like Ann.
