Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
This July I am taking on the huge challenge of swimming across the English Channel from Dover to France!!! The official distance is 21 miles, however this can change according to the tides. Rough wind conditions could mean I swim up to 35miles!
Three weeks ago I did not think this was going to happen, I have been unable to train during lockdown and I am completely disorganised but they tell me I’ve got hours of swimming ‘in the bank and I can do it!’
I have chosen to raise money for The Multiple Sclerosis charity as it is close to my heart. My dear Aunty Dale suffers with this and they have helped towards buying her electric scooter! (To say she is super excited I have chosen this charity and extremely excited about my swim, having been a great swimmer herself is an understatement!!
There have been 2,369 successful Channel swim crossings since the first swim in 1875. For a swim to be ‘officially recognised’ I cannot wear a wetsuit! I am only allowed swimming hat, goggles and costume. It can be very chilly, the water in July will be between 14 and 18C. I will not be allowed to touch anyone else during my swim, so food and any other supplies must be thrown to me on a rope from my escort boat.
The English Channel is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world with around 600 tankers and 200 ferries passing through everyday! It is the job of my Pilot to make sure I swim through all this traffic safely.
My ambition to swim the Channel started when I swam my first mile at 9 years old. This year I turn 50 so what better way to celebrate?!
I have been training very hard over the last year swimming lengths in my local pool every day and swimming weekly in the lake and river wherever possible to acclimatise myself to the cold water.
All donations will be much appreciated,
love Kate and Aunty Dale xx
