Story
Well after spending 24 hours yomping, peddling and rowing, Kat managed to cover nearly 75 miles on the veterans' journey to Kabul. Daz (who more than once queried why his big sis had signed him up for the challenge...can't think why) was a total machine - he covered nearly 137 miles!!! Totally amazed that nothing hurts; Kat at least is positively bouncing.
The Shrewsbury team that we were part of collectively covered over 1700 miles. So after a short pitstop somewhere near the Ukraine / Russia border (!), we'll set off again with the aim of reaching the British Embassy in Kabul in time for mince pies and mulled wine.
A BIG thank you to all those who have donated to the cause. Our Just Giving page will stay up until the end of the year; every penny donated is very, very much appreciated.
xx
The first national ‘We Are Veterans Challenge’ is raising funds for the Veterans’ Orthopaedic Centre located in the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Hospital. It’s the first of its kind, open to all those who have served in Her Majesty’s armed forces, including those who completed national service. The centre currently delivers two outpatient clinics per month but wants to expand to offer a whole range of orthopaedic treatment and re-hab which will also be connected to other healthcare services, in a purpose built environment.
The national challenge is to collectively travel the virtual road from the National Arboretum in Staffordshire to the British Embassy in Kabul - a total of 3599 miles - under human power during the weekend of 11th October. We’ll be human powering our way for a minimum of 24 hours (and probably a maximum of 24 hours and 1 minute) as part of the Shrewsbury Armed Forces and Veterans’ Breakfast Club team.
So, brother (ex-army) and sister (ex-RAF…keep the best ’til last, obviously!) will be getting their creaky old knees moving and trying to stay awake for 24 hours to raise funds for a very worthy cause. Anyone who has served in the armed forces will be only too aware that knackered knees come with the job! (Can we book our appointments at the centre now? We need them for the first clinic after 13th October!)
We would be very grateful for any support you can give in whatever measure. Thank you xx
