Hi everyone!
Last year I started cycling again after a break of about 6 years! I wanted to lose weight initially, and after 12 months I've lost almost 2 stone, I joined Angmering cycling club and this has enabled me to move to another level of cycling with the knowledge of others and the support on group rides.
This year I decided to challenge myself - a ‘century’: 100 miles, (or 160 km) taking part in the inaugural Ride London–Surrey 100. Boris was adamant that he wanted the London Olympic legacy to live on and Ride 100 is a weekend dedicated to cycling in the capital, the pinnacle of which is the Ride 100 event on Sunday 31 July. Taking in the majority of the Olympic Road Race route including highlights such as Richmond Park, Hampton Court, Box Hill and a sprint (hopefully) finish on The Mall with a nod to Her Maj’, as well as cheeky extras such as the A12 out of the Olympic Park and Leith Hill, Surrey’s highest point. So, this is where you guys come in. Cycling 160 km is no easy feat. In fact the furthest I’ve ridden in one go is only 120 km, so my hard work starts now. Billed as the London Marathon for cycling, Ride 100 will be an awesome challenge but also an inspirational event for all taking part and watching. I aim to be one of those people crossing the finish line outside Buckingham Palace in July. My training starts now. I’ve upped my weekly average to about 120km a week. I've also entered 1 'sportive' of 180km and will update you on my progress through these in due course. However my real motivation comes from the support of my family (Caroline allows me far too much time on the bike, and Florence helps by sharing my energy bars!!) and friends.
Financial support via sponsorship is brilliant, but so are your messages and indeed companionship on training rides over the coming months. And I would of course be delighted to see you at any stage of the route on the day itself. I'm hoping Caroline and Florence will be cheering me on somewhere along the route.
I lost family members (both grandparents) to Prostate Cancer hence my decision to raise much needed funds by dong the Ride London-Surrey 100 for Prostate Cancer UK. These guys do a sterling job in the fight against this vicious disease, and with their help thousands of chaps are helped and indeed saved, every year. So please, dig deep, and help me to help them to help all of us men.Thank you so much.Karl x
