Wildlife protectors across Africa are uniting to defend decades of conservation progress. Ranger teams spanning the continent are joining forces in the Wildlife Ranger Challenge with one goal to bring thousands of their counterparts back to the field

Story

About the Wildlife Ranger Challenge:

COVID-19 has brought tourism revenue to a halt across Africa, threatening the important work and livelihoods of the rangers who protect iconic African wildlife such as elephants, pangolins, rhinos, lions, and more. Ranger teams are now uniting around the Wildlife Ranger Challenge, a running race with one goal: to raise money to support thousands of their fellow rangers. Now is the time to go the extra mile—it’s time to race to support our rangers. Every dollar donated will be matched by the Scheinberg Relief Fund, doubling your generous contribution.

Your contribution will help support 48 rangers and an estimated 144 livelihoods in Karingani Game Reserve in Mozambique

The role of rangers:

Rangers are responsible for securing the territorial integrity of Karingani Game Reserve, with the ultimate purpose of restoring the reserve to be an ecological expansion of South Africa's Kruger National Park into Mozambique. Karingani rangers monitor 73km of fence line in an area of Mozambique that was historically attributed to over 75% of the rhino poaching incursions into Kruger National Park. Key ranger activities include patrolling, gathering and reporting environmental data, and minimizing incursions into Karingani and Kruger, thus safeguarding both reserves’ rhino populations.

How your donation will help:

Any additional funding would support the following:

1) Training: Skills development, motivation and recruitment

2) Equipment for K9 tracking unit: Tracking harnesses to allow real-time reporting of dogs and unit in pursuit of poachers

3) Aerial support K9 teams - increase reach of the K9 tracking response unit for increased effectiveness by enabling remote and rapid deployment over a broader area of the reserve.

Effects of the pandemic:

The pandemic has restricted cashflow to the budget, affecting funding for many things rangers require to effectively carry out their responsibilities, including training, recruitment, equipment, K9 support equipment and aerial surveillance, and deployment support of K9 tracking teams.
