Help to beat cancer.
Thank you for visiting my Shine fundraising page in support of Cancer Research UK.
I lost my Mum to cancer in 2006 and seeing her suffer was heartbreaking. The feeling of helplessness was unbearable and even after we were told it was terminal I kept thinking "we won't lose her, they're doctors, they'll find a way to make her better". Mum was treated at The Royal Marsden and you couldn't imagine a more dedicated and supportive medical team, they were amazing. But unfortunately sometimes cancer is too powerful even for the best to overcome.
When Mum first became ill, cancer wasn't something I could even comprehend; she wasn't a smoker, didn't drink and had only ever spent her life helping others. It wasn't possible for cancer to hit so close to home and certainly not someone like my Mum. But cancer doesn't hold any prejudice and seeing first hand how fast and aggressive it can be was horrifying.
So much more than a Mum, she was my rock, my sister and my best friend and losing her the way we did was devastating and cruel. Nobody should have to see someone they love go through such a terrible illness. I'll never get over losing her or the way she was taken from us but if I can do my bit to help stop cancer, it will feel like a small piece of justice.
I know she'll be up there watching me so my biggest goal is to make her proud. If I can raise some money to help prevent others suffering from this terrible illness while I'm at, then I know she'll be twice as proud and her star will shine twice as bright.
Please dig deep and sponsor me – it’s quick, easy and totally secure. Let's beat cancer sooner!
Thanks,
Karen x
