Karen is running the 2023 London Marathon to support the JDRF

London Marathon 2023 · 23 April 2023 ·
Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page and supporting Type 1 diabetes research!
Being a children's diabetes nurse has given me an insight into the challenges of living with type 1 diabetes.
The day to day management of type 1 includes frequent blood glucose monitoring, having numerous insulin injections and counting carbohydrates in the food you eat. There are many decisions to make each day including managing exercise, managing bloods when they are above target, managing low blood sugars, making sure you have all your supplies with you and managing illness.
I wanted to do something to raise money that would be tough, although I have been running for over 20 years I have never ran a marathon. I am nervous as I know this will be hard, but excited to join team JDRF and contribute to this worthwhile cause.
Whilst I train for, and ultimately complete this challenge I will keep in mind the children, young people and adults living with Type 1 diabetes. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated.
The JDRF...........
'Fund research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes
Work to accelerate the pace of research and the delivery of treatments in the UK
Give support and a voice to children and adults living with type 1 and their families.'
If you have type 1 diabetes, your pancreas doesn’t make insulin. Without insulin, blood sugar can’t get into cells and builds up in the bloodstream. High blood sugar is damaging to the body and causes many of the symptoms and complications of diabetes.
Managing type 1 diabetes can be challenging, you need to take insulin every day to keep your blood glucose levels under control. There are so many factors to consider when living with diabetes, such as exercising, carb counting and technologies.
