At our 20 week scan we were told that Eleni had Talipes (clubfoot) and that her right foot was turning inwards. Anxious and confused we found out about the charity Steps who were able to guide us through our options. Steps informed us of the non invasive Ponseti method of treatment, what to expect along the way and they advised us on hospitals and consultants who were experts in treating talipes.
On the 4th of February 2014 Eleni was born with Unilateral Talipes Equinovares meaning that her right foot was fixed inwards. At 2 weeks and 2 days old Eleni went into her first cast from her hip to her toe. This was followed by 4 more weekly physio sessions and cast changes. At 7 weeks old a tenetomy was performed to release the pressure in her achilles tendon. 3 weeks later and Eleni was free of casts but we moved onto the boots and bar stage which were to be worn initially for 23 hours a day for 12 weeks moving down to overnight wear thereafter.
Eleni's right foot is now perfect and she is a happy healthy one year old soon to be taking her first steps, she will continue to wear her boots and bar overnight until she is 5 years old to prevent relapse. Eleni has been, and continues to be, an absolute star throughout all her treatment, she never ceases to amaze us as she crawls around and stands up in her boots and bar, she is going to make an excellent snowboarder one day!
Steps have supported our family throughout our Talipes journey. From the initial diagnosis to present day. We can't thank them enough!
