My Story
For those of you that don't know I had Ovarian Cancer myself 3yrs ago and had to have a full Hysterectomy followed by Chemo. As if having and getting over an unplanned hysterectomy wasn't enough, experiencing the sometimes painful side effects and total exhaustion of the chemo started 3wks later and went on for 6mths. I couldn't believe how tired I was, even going upstairs I had to lay down for 10mins as it was such an effort!
Anyway, once Chemo had finished I could start some exercise so used to walk our puppy every day starting for 5 mins the first week and week by week up to 30mins. This helped me a lot, I was then able to join the local Cancer groups swimming club every week. I guess it took me a good 18mths to get back to some form of normality. At times I didn't think I would ever be the same again, but I always tried to think positive, afterall I was lucky to get a second chance.
Last year I saw a local cycle event raising money for Ovarian Cancer so I decided I would try it. They offered 2 routes 18miles and 43.5miles so I thought the short one would be fine. I hadn't been on a bike since school so I treated myself to a lovely new Hybrid Bike in the sale. Harry I called him. Harry and I cycled the beautiful Suffolk countryside 3 times a week over the next 10wks. Some evenings Simon would come along with me on his bike offering moral support. He always cycled behind me for some reason, he did say on numerous occasions he enjoyed the view!!
To my delight I managed the 43.5miles on the day, I felt fantastic, it was such an achievement for me. Now I've got the cycling bug! Well, at least its cheaper than horses!
This year my neighbour created a ladies cycling group which I am now part of. We are called Woodbridge Women on Wheels and their are 10/12 in our group and growing all the time. We go out every weekend and always include a coffee stop with cake! Well we think we deserve it. As they are all very fit and much slimmer ladies I decided to invest in a road bike (Sally) so I could keep up. Its so much faster, I love it. Simon hasn't been out with me yet this year but he will now the nights are getting lighter.
This year I am do doing Women v Cancers "Ride the Night" its on 31st May and is 100k (63miles) around the streets of London at night!! We are raising money for Breast, Cervical and Ovarian Cancers.
I would be delighted if you would be interested in sponsoring me. What ever amount you wish large or small its all going to a great cause. I feel so lucky to have been able to detect mine, get the treatment I needed and still be here today. So I want to help others to get the early detection, treatment and support they need too.
Thank you and love to you all xx
