Story
20 years ago, following the birth of my first baby, I developed a psychosis. I was terrified and when I saw a psychiatrist she asked that I be admitted to a mental health unit. I was desperate to be somewhere safe but couldn’t take my baby with me because I would have been admitted to an adult mental health unit as there was no bed available in a specialist mother and baby unit, the nearest was around 100 miles away.
The thought of being separated from my baby was even more frightening than the thoughts dancing around my head so I refused. I was very, very fortunate that the consultant agreed that my partner taking 5 weeks off work to look after us would be adequate. I received ongoing treatment from the mental health team until I eventually recovered. It was truly a life changing experience.
Today, in North Wales and many other parts of the UK mothers, in similar situations to mine, still have no access to the few MBU beds available. If you are able to spare any cash to help APP support mothers and their families I would be truly grateful, if you can’t spare anything then please share my page to raise awareness of the desperate need for more MBUs.
