Story
I am one of the thoracic surgeons at Guy's Hospital/Dorcas ward. It is my goal to cycle around Loch Ness to raise money to help our patients with Lung cancer and Mesothelioma.
Lung cancer and mesothelioma account for a large number of deaths worldwide, but surgery can be curative. Now there are also other treatments that along with surgery can treat even advanced cancer. We are conducting cutting edge patient and research studies to identify important new treatment developments. There is very little funding for this within the NHS but our charity ensures that it is our patients at Guys that benefit from donations. Past donations have funded research into genetic testing of cancers to tailor treatment and some more practical projects such as preoperative fitness testing to make surgery safer, a refurbished patient/relative waiting area and special high flow oxygen machines that mean patients can be on the ward instead of intensive care. In addition, we are one of the only departments to have a fitness gym actually on the ward. This helps patient get home as soon as possible.
We are the largest surgical department in the UK offering surgical cure for lung cancer and mesothelioma. We link with our oncology colleagues to constantly seek improvement with treatment and research for these conditions. Please help us to fund these important clinical research programs to benefit all patients. Our fund is called lung cancer and mesothelioma (876) and your donation is extremely important. All funds raised will go directly to our department.
