On 17/09/17 I am proud to be attempting to ride from London to Brighton (!) under the banner of whoishussain.org. They are an apolitical, global organisation inspired by this eponymous figure, a man who willingly sacrificed all in choosing right over wrong, to stand against tyranny and oppression. A man raised in a household that stood with humanity, especially the innocent, the downtrodden, the powerless, regardless of religion, creed or colour.
Their work, which I hope you will support is currently focused on raising funds for provision of shelter, food, clothing and mobile showers for those who find themselves homeless, seeking shelter in central London. Whoishussain have been serving the needs of these all too often forgotten people and are already running a weekly food drive and now aspire to build on this.
Staffed by volunteers who emphasise the project is about much more than food, they also seek to combat the loneliness and neglect that comes with homelessness; handing out food offers a gateway to conversation and an opportunity to build meaningful relationships. Aiming to offer long term solutions, they run additional activities including CV workshops to help guests gain employment. Their pop-up barbershop in October was a particular highlight, providing the simple remedy of a fresh haircut to leave guests feeling confident and empowered
Unfortunately the numbers of destitute is rising, with recent stats indicating there are up to 4500 rough sleepers in the capital; we can all try and do more to help.
