After years of having the desire to run the London Marathon, I'm finally going to do it. So what's different about this time compared to the other times that I applied is that I've got my 2 girls running it with me, and I'm also going to run it in the honour of my niece, who had decided that she also wanted to achieve this goal but was sadly taken away from us, far, far too soon.

I've come across "Meningitis" so many times in my life but have only just realised the shocking real meaning of what meningitis is, that one fateful day last August, when it claimed the life of my beautiful, bubbly, loving niece. She was only 20 years old.

When we are told by the health authorities that we or our children need to have certain vaccinations, we read a bit about it, then go and have them done. We never think that this will affect us really, even when we are given the statistics, we always think, it won't happen to me or my family. That's what I had thought about meningitis. When we hear about how these diseases can affect anyone, we always think, it won't happen to me or my family. Again, that's what I thought about meningitis. I couldn't be further from the truth. Meningitis could strike anywhere, anytime and it could happen to anyone. I want to spread the awareness of what meningitis is and what it can do. I want everyone to know the symptoms, be aware that they may or may not all be present and if there is any doubt whatsoever, then to act very quickly. I want our children, our young adults, to have the vaccination that could potentially save their lives. I want us to stop thinking it won't happen to us because it can. It can happen anywhere, anytime. It happened in our family. It took our precious girl.
