Story
My uncle, Stuart Spicer, was known by many people around the world. He could light up a room by his Hawaiian shirts and smile, and was many things to many people. He was my uncle and second father, my dad's brother and best friend, brother to his other siblings, a son, taxi driver and most importantly a friend to many. He was undoubtedly the loveliest man to walk this earth.
Uncle Stuart was passionate about his hobbies of aviation and travelling and of course photographing both. I'm so happy that in his life time he got to visit so many countries, and have so many adventures. He watched my sister and I grow up from our first days on this earth, he let us restyle his hair into Mohicans, watched every primary school play, attended our school sports days and we went on many trips away, both in England and abroad. He was the greatest photographer capturing so many amazing memories, although I'm glad that he didn't capture everything like the moment I was sick all over my favourite strawberry T-shirt after he took me to the park on his birthday! There are so many memories for me, and for so many other people, but sadly in 2013 the making of memories and his adventures came to an abrupt and untimely end.
2013 started a bad year for us, my Great-Nanny died the day after my birthday and my Grandad had a stroke on my sister's birthday from which, thankfully, he has now remarkably recovered. Then in September Stuart went into hospital for a routine operation, but during his recovery he had a stroke which unfortunately was so severe he would never recover from it. On September 21st 2013, surrounded by his mum, dad, brothers and sister, the decision was made to turn off his life support. My sister and I never got to say goodbye! His passing took everyone by surprise, hurting my family and his friends, even people who used to only see him for 10 minutes in the morning on their school run were saddened and in shock.
The last three years have been very hard with him not being here, especially being the 5th person in our family. I'd expect to see him on a Sunday afternoon staining the carpet because he'd never take his trainers off, or out and about during the week at the shops or on the taxi rank. I've had so many milestones during the last few years, such as my 18th birthday, my GSCE and ‘A’ levels exams, Year 11 and 6th Form Prom. He would’ve been there to take photos and been so proud of my results, and of course, all the memories still to come as I grow further into an adult… university, getting married, children, the list goes on. The realisation is that he'll never be there to capture and enjoy those days or watch my children grow up, like how he watched me.
Stuart loved travelling, and looking back through his photos has inspired me. So therefore I have decided to make some memories and have adventures of my own, and start my own travelling with Thailand on the list first. I have also decided to make some more memories of my own by raising money for Stroke Association by my own events.
