Our team is taking up the challenge of completing the Coast to Coast in 1 day on 16th May 2015. Donations will help Diabetes UK fund research into finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes and research into the Artificial Pancreas.
In January 2013 my son Alex was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 2 1/2 years old. He has to stay attached to an insulin pump 24 hrs per day which constantly feeds insulin through a cannula inserted under his skin. Every gram of carbohydrate he eats or drinks has to be calculated and he has 10 to 15 finger prick tests every day. All this to keep him alive and he and others like him will have to endure this for the rest of their lives unless a cure is found. So please please help us raise as much money as possible to find a cure for this awful condition.
What is Type 1 Diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes is commonly an autoimmune disease that attacks the pancreas meaning that it can no longer produce insulin which is needed to convert food into energy. Without it the body tries to get energy by breaking down other tissue. It can be life threatening if blood glucose levels aren't controlled and it can be very difficult to maintain good control. We're very lucky that Alex takes it all in his stride, never complaining about the daily hypos and hypers that leave him feeling poorly; he an inspiration to his Mam and I.
