Story
One in a thousand children and young people are living with a condition called Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) and a number of others with related inflammatory rheumatological conditions (for example Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Vasculitis). Children with these conditions require a specialist team to diagnose and treat them, enabling them to live in the best possible way with their condition.
In November 2017 a nationally recognised paediatric rheumatology service was formally launched in the East of England region, based at Addenbrookes Hospital with a joint hub at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. This "Child and Adolescent East of England Rheumatology Service" (CHEERS) includes doctors, specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, a pharmacist, research team, psychologists and support staff.
We are passionate about improving the care of young people with these conditions across our large geographical region, and are striving to develop and improve the services we offer. We have therefore decided to complete a 75 mile cycle ride between the two hub centres from Norwich to Cambridge to raise money for this new service.
The money raised will help to develop the whole service but specifically it will allow us to fund a yearly adolescent independence break, early years play sessions for families, yearly family fun days, our parent group, new medical equipment and assist professional development of team members.
The target set will allow us to buy an ultrasound machine to use for diagnosis and management, and we are delighted to have already raised half of the money required. Any support you can give us will be gratefully received and put to excellent use!
