Story
I've been playing video games for as long as I could hold a Playstation 1 controller. Some of my fondest memories have involved gaming, and they've also made life much easier during some of the hardest moments. For all its merits though, gaming sometimes isn't the most accessible hobby, meaning that some of the people who most need them to improve their quality of life, like those who are paralysed, can't enjoy them. SpecialEffect is helping bring video games to people with physical disabilities with some cutting-edge tech, and that's why I'm running Oxford Half Marathon in support of them.
SpecialEffect put fun and inclusion back into the lives of people with physical disabilities by helping them to play video games. The Oxford Half Marathon is a fantastic fundraising event which takes place in the city of the dreaming spires.SpecialEffect have been continuing to offer assessments, equipment loans and advice during the Covid lockdowns and appreciate your support more than ever!
SpecialEffect enables severely disbaled people to use technology in any way possible - using whichever part(s) of their body that work best - by creating bespoke tech adaptations for their individual needs. It's so important that they can join in with their family and friends, to be included and not left out. This can hugely benefit mental wellbeing, self-esteem, quality of life, not to mention much needed fun.
SpecialEffect specialises in Eye Control Technology. Through eye-movement alone, SpecialEffect helps people operate a computer so they can communicate and regain some level of independence, giving them a voice when they may not have one of their own.
Tom, a young man who SpecialEffect helped, wrote simply: "Thank you for giving me my life back." Tom sadly died a while ago, but he was able to game happly right up tot he very night he passed away. His family are now good friends of SpecialEffect.
