#HelpKeepJustinSafe
We are currently raising funds for Little Angels Service Dogs, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that places life-changing service dogs with children and adults with disabilities. As a nonprofit, Little Angels never require recipients to pay for a dog. Instead, recipients are encouraged to get involved with fundraising. Training these highly skilled dogs is very costly. It costs Little Angels an average of $38,000 to raise, care for, train, and place one service dog. Little Angels Service Dogs train their seizure alert dogs to actually be able to sense (by an individual’s smell) and alert when a seizure is about to happen. This obviously has huge benefits for those with epilepsy as it can increase their independence and safety by potentially preventing falls.
*~* WE ARE BEYOND HAPPY TO INFORM YOU THAT JUSTIN HAS BEEN APPROVED TO BE A RECIPIENT OF A SEIZURE ALERT DOG!!!! *~*
Here is a little history about Justin’s seizures and needs. Justin started having seizures in 2001. Over the years, his seizures have changed in nature, frequency and intensity. He is taking large doses of 3 anti-seizure medications, and has a VNS (Vagus Nerve Simulator) surgically implanted in his body. Even with all this, his seizures are still uncontrolled. Justin has experienced many trips to the ER as a result of falling and being injured during his seizures. Most often the injuries are to his head - severe bumps, bruises, and nasty scrapes/road rash to his head and face. He has fractured his nose a few times, and even broken his collarbone. Due to the almost certainty of experiencing an injury during a seizure, Justin is not allowed to leave the house alone, can’t shower alone (he had seizure in the shower/tub once and was dangerously close to drowning before a parent was able to get to him) , cannot cook using the stove or oven for fear of falling into a hot surface, and many other simple tasks that someone without a seizure disorder takes for granted. As if having a seizure disorder was not enough of an everyday concern for Justin, he also has a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome which is high functioning Autism. Asperger’s Syndrome often makes new surroundings, changes in routines, attending some social activities and events where there are loud noises more challenging for Justin. He also has anxiety with large crowds and the imposed limitations due to his seizure disorder. Having a seizure alert dog would provide safety, freedom and a new found sense of security and confidence for Justin. The seizure alert dog would also act as an emotional support animal for him….a new best friend and companion.
Please consider donating to Little Angels Service Dogs so they are able to continue to provide these wonderful dogs to recipients like Justin.
