Story
I am running the London Marathon in memory of my dear friend Maggie who passed away from Bowel Cancer in 2022. We were friends for over 40 years and met as teachers at Knightswood Secondary School in Glasgow in 1981 educating kids in adjacent labs; Maggie teaching Biology and me teaching Chemistry! Maggie had a successful teaching career culminating in a Deputy Headship and was very active in encouraging and educating children on the benefits of exercise for both mental and physical well being. We bonded pretty quickly at Knightswood and took up running together. Maggie was a talented runner and subsequently won many running events and ran for Scotland Vets during the 1990s. She also took part in the Elite Woman's event of the London Marathon as she was a sub 3 hour marathon runner! She was an inspirational character and volunteered every week at the Junior Park Run in our local park in Glasgow. We had many great times and laughs together and she is sorely missed by family and friends. Maggie was a great support to me in my marathon efforts although she pushed me hard during training and put up with my moaning! She was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer 5 years ago and endured many surgeries and clinical trials in her determination to live. We both ran the Park Run in Glasgow 2 years ago whilst she was in remission. She was taken too soon and I am running to raise funds for Bowel Cancer Research to help other people and their families facing this disease.
