Story

I am taking part in the 14 mile Royal Marsden March in memory of my beautiful daughter Amanda who passed away in 2012. Amanda was a lovely, bubbly 16 year old girl who loved school, had lots of friends and just loved life. She worked hard and went to grammar school, she liked drama, dancing and was taking ballet lessons when she decided to dedicate her time to concentrate on her upcoming gcse exams. Amanda was poorly for a few days and on her way to school one morning she just collapsed. Blood tests revealed severe anaemia and after a few months of having blood transfusions and medication further blood tests revealed the anaemia had developed into leukaemia. Amanda received 4 months of intense chemotherapy and gruesome treatment that led to hair loss and completely changed the way she looked but it was worth it when she gained remission. Eventually Amanda left hospital and looked forward to going back to school, joining her friends in the 6th form and just being the teenager she was. Life was looking better. Within 10 weeks Amanda had relapsed and a second round of intense chemotherapy and gruesome treatment that totally stripped the body of its immune system was given in preparation for a bone marrow transplant. A 41 year old German man was her donor and the transplant was a success, the future was bright and Amanda was really looking forward to getting her life back. She passed all her GCSE's despite her illness and was looking forward to mapping out her future debating whether to be a Dr or a Clic Sargent where she could get involved with children suffering from cancer. Sadly 4 months after her BMT she caught a virus which led to internal bleeding and she passed away aged 17. Amanda wanted to give something back to the Royal Marsden for all the kindness shown to her during her treatment and to help other children facing Cancer. We are raising money for vital equipment that is used to treat cancer patients to help make their lives more bearable during such devastating times.
