Story

The Road to Recovery Trust are the charity behind Newcastles only recovery Cafe, George Street Social and they're at risk of immediate closure. The Trust provides safe spaces and a supportive community for people in recovery from all kinds of addictions and works relentlessly to tackle the stigma that many vulnerable people face when struggling with addiction.

James, Kris, Nicolle and I are doing a sponsored Sky Dive to raise funds to help save The Road To Recovery Trust and in particular George Street Social, which plays a massive part in all of our recoveries, as it does for so many other people in the area who are suffering from addiction. If George Street Social were to shut its doors good it would be devastating for the recovery community, and the city of Newcastle which is actively trying to promote itself as a recovery city.

For me personally,  George Street Social is my happy place. I've spent a lot of my life feeling like I never really fit in but right from the very first moment I stepped foot in George Street I felt a sense of belonging that you'll only understand if you visit the place yourself.  Its a place I can go and no matter how bad of a day I'm having, when I step through the doors there will always be a friendly face, a listening ear with a brilliant cuppa and all of my troubles fade away. As well as the cafe, I attend 12 step fellowship meetings there which are vital to my recovery. George Street is so much more than just a cafe, it is like a home away from home and I really couldn't imagine life without the place.

James - George Street to me is a home away from home. When I first got into recovery I heard a lot about George Street and when I finally went, I fell in love. Always greated with a smile. If I'm ever struggling or having bad days, George Street is the first place I go. It's such a big part of my recovery and a lot of others. I really can't explain just how much George Street means to me.

Kris - As an addict I've spent my whole life feeling like I never really fit in or belong anywhere but when I'm in George Street I feel like I can be myself without judgement, it feels like home. There's a buzz around the place and you can't help but feel energised when you're in the place. I owe my life to recovery and a large part of my recovery is George Street social. Recovery is my passion for life, my reason for living and I'm determined to spread the message of recovery, in order to do that places like George Street Social are vital not only to myself but to the city of Newcastle.

Nicolle - George Street Social has felt like a second home to me through my recovery from Alcoholism. From finding sobriety on the 9th May 2018, it has provided me with a safe space where I can share my struggles, attend twelve step meetings and make friends with people who have now become family. Their support is limitless, and I have had the privilege of working at George St as a Junior chef and well as finding the gift of sobriety through George Street Social. It gave me hope when I had nothing, it would be devastating to lose a place that is a life line to so many people.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story. Please please please give what you can and share our story with others. If George Street Social were to close its doors for good then a large community of people would be without a place they call home. We simply can't allow that to happen.
