I walked for a total of 3 hours on Saturday 20th February which was the Big Walk for Water nationwide event. I walked in steep terrain in the vicinity of Old Winchester Hill NNR, S. Downs. I thought of those Ethiopian communities who live in such an arid environment and who need to trek all day and every day to collect water high up in mountain ravines. Such families really need our financial help.
By contrast you will see in my photo gallery that our climate in the UK is becoming wetter in the winter months with many areas prone to flooding. Climate change is affecting us all in one way or another. The Wayfarer's footpath had transformed into a stream! Still managed to navigate through the shallow section and where it got deeper and became what looked like a permanent stream - the path way continued along a wooded bank.
I met many people out walking - these days national nature reserves are receiving considerably greater visitor numbers and it was exceedingly muddy in the picnic area closest to the carpark. I noticed two cars who had arrived just before me - only park temporarily as they visitors were put off by the mud and almost immediately returned to their cars and drove off! Fortunately I had my nordic walking poles which helped me pass through without slipping too much.
I'm happy to walk and raise funds for CAFOD's work and I hope that fellow parishioners from St John Fisher, Rochester also took part. One or two of us are committed to walking throughout the Lenten period - in support of the 10,000 steps a day Lenten target that CAFOD has encouraged people to participate in. Whatever we can do to show our concern and solidarity - is of great worth.
