The Ann Conroy Trust was set up in the to increase knowledge and understanding of Chiari Malformation, Syringomyelia and associated conditions as well as to provide support for patients, their relatives and carers.
Chiari Malformation is a condition where the cerebellar tonsils of the brain descend through an opening in the base of the skull into what should be a space in the spinal cord. This can cause compression of the brain stem and disruption of the flow of cerebrospinal fluid at the top of the spinal canal. This can result in pain and tingling in the limbs, dizziness, nausea, balance problems, visual disturbances, problems swallowing, pressure headaches.
Syringomyelia is a disorder affecting the nervous system where fluid-filled cavities develop inside the spinal cord. Patients who have Syringomyelia present a variety of symptoms ranging from neck and arm pain through to fairly severe disability, with muscle weakness and paralysis.
These are rare conditions. As a result there is little support available for patients. Relatively little is known about the condition outside of those specialists in the field.
Our friends’ grandson, Harry, who will be 3 years old in December, has the rare brain abnormality Chiari Malformation. He lives with daily severe headaches and also has problems with both swallowing and balance. He has had many stays in hospital including where he has had 3 major brain surgeries.
We have been helping Harry by providing support to his family and maintaining a circle of friends in offering prayer especially when Harry is undergoing surgery.
From 23rd to 27th September we are walking the last 100km of the Camino Frances from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela. We ask if you could support Harry and others like him by sponsoring us on our pilgrimage walk.
