Story
I left school in 1980 at the age of 16 and started working for John Thorne in Somerset. I stayed there for 5 years then worked at Richard Holders near Bristol for one year. I then took a year out of racing and went to Australia. When I came back I went to work for Martin Pipe (September 1987) and have continued to work there for 34 years!
Obviously during that time David has taken over from Martin and I also did have a few breaks during that time due to having three children who are all grown up now!
I have never ridden in a race before and am very much looking forward to the challenge in aid of a good cause. Thank you to David for allowing me the opportunity to take part and hopefully you can all donate and help me reach my target!
Racing Welfare is a registered charity supporting the workforce of British horseracing, including stud, stable and racecourse staff, alongside those working in associated roles across the industry. They offer professional guidance and practical help to all those whose dedication is vital for the well-being of racing. Their work aims to help people, from recruitment to retirement, to thrive in day-to-day life and through a range of life's challenges.
In 2020, Racing Welfare saw a huge increase in those coming to the charity for support. By the end of the year, they supported over 4,500 individuals, marking an 80% increase on the numbers from 2019. The fallout of Covid-19 continues to impact many people across the horseracing industry and the charity's services remain in high demand.
Racing Welfare relies almost exclusively on donations. The Wincanton Race Day is specifically aimed at increasing awareness of the wide breadth of services that the charity provides and at raising essential funds to help them to support the people who made your day at the races possible.
