Matt and I will be taking part in the Walk of Hope for Brain Tumour Research this September, along with our Son Harry and his girlfriend Leah. Last year Matt was too ill to do it so we thought we'd make up for it this year and try a bigger challenge! Our plan is to walk from Cranfield United Football Club to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium! The walk will be approximately 47 miles and we plan to do this over 6th and 7th September. The 7th September will be the 4 year anniversary (craniversary) of Matt's craniotomy so has a special meaning to us and is something we try to celebrate rather than commiserate.
Matt has been a huge Tottenham fan all his life so he thought this walk would be fitting. The only question he had for the surgeon before surgery was 'when I wake up from surgery, I won't be an Arsenal supporter will I?!' Tottenham have lost 3 of their own players to brain tumours; Alan Gilzean, Cyril Knowles and Dean Richards and also in the memory of fellow footballers Glen Roeder, Paul Mariner and Emlyn Hughes, as well as the thousands of other people each year who are given the devastating diagnosis of a brain tumour.
Everyone who knows us knows the reasons we are doing this. The charity is close to our hearts as Matt was diagnosed with a 6cm brain tumour in 2018. This followed 7 years of symptoms being written off as Vertigo by his GP. He had surgery to remove the tumour but the effects of this has changed Matt's and our family's lives forever. He is now registered sight impaired, has Epilepsy, memory problems, left sided weakness, fatigue and has recently been diagnosed with psychological seizures which affect his life daily. The reason we are passionate about supporting the charity is due to the fact that research into brain tumours is massively under funded. They receive just 1% of the national spend into cancer research yet brain tumours kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer and less than 12% of people diagnosed with a brain tumour survive beyond 5 years. We think the amount of funding into research is so unfair and this really needs to change!
We would be very grateful for any donations received, however big or small to help this vital charity and help to change the above statistics.
