Having singularly failed at my marathon attempts, I have foresworn running in favour of two wheels.  Yes, I’ve swapped to Ian’s sport.  I’ve even given up on finding my own challenges; piggy-backing instead on other people’s!  First it was Chumley’s Way of the Roses coast to coast bike ride, and this time it’s Ailsa’s crazy Swedish challenge.  Purely because she liked the look of the feed stop snacks, she decided to sign up for the Vätternrundan: a 300km / 186m ride around the second largest lake in Sweden!

I foolishly agreed to join her, and now four of us will be taking on this challenge.  The elevation may pale into insignificance against Ian’s Étape ride (this is only 5,062ft or 1,543m of climbing) but it is considerably further than I have ever ridden.  I’ve managed 1,250 miles of riding so far this year, although my longest ride to date is 107 miles but, hey, it’s only another 80, right?!

Starting at 8:30pm on Friday 13^th June, we have until midnight the following day to complete, but I’m aiming to finish in as close to 15 hours as possible.

As ever, I’ll be riding in memory of my sister-in-law, Lynn Archer-Huntley, who died three years ago.  During her illness, Lynn received fantastic in-patient care at Tŷ Olwen Hospice at Morriston Hospital in Swansea.  Although Tŷ Olwen has a strong financial commitment from the NHS to fund the day to day running of the service, it is necessary for the Tŷ Olwen Trust to raise additional funds to provide the level of care they feel their patients and their families deserve.  Lynn certainly deserved, and received, that high level of care, and that’s why I’d be really grateful if you could donate whatever you can to the Tŷ Olwen Trust today.
