I will be running to raise money for Rise domestic abuse services in Sussex. Some years ago a friend of a friend with a violent husband received fantastic support from a local shelter, and it hit home to me how vital these kinds of services are. It is hard to imagine that 1 in 4 women will experience abuse at some point in their lifetimes. Many of these women will have children, 90% of whom will be in the same or next room when the abuse occurs.

Domestic abuse has a higher rate of repeat victimisation than any other crime. On average a women will be attacked 35 times before she reports the abuse, over half of all rape is committed by a partner or ex-partner, and domestic abuse is the single highest cause of homicide in women in the UK.

As well as crisis accommodation in two refuges, Rise also offers crisis appointments, a helpline, counselling, housing, legal and financial advice, solicitors' appointments, support groups, play therapy, and one-to-one support. It costs over £3,100 every day to keep these vital, life-saving services available for local families, so every penny you can spare will help keep safe some of the most vulnerable in our community.
