Louise and I received fantastic support when we ran the Royal Parks Half Marathon in 2009 in aid of Epilespy Action following Lottie being struck down with a very severe form of epilepsy in April 2009. Little Lottie's epilepsy took a whole year to get under control. Easter Sunday last year was the first seizure free day for over a year. Touch wood, she has remained seizure free ever since.
Far from being out of the woods, Lottie has just turned four, but is developmentally about 18 months. She is at a special nursery and making good progress, although how much progress is possible is an unknown.
Throughout last summer we were extremely well supported by The Shooting Star Children's Hospice. While it cares for terminal ill children, it also provides respite care for the likes of Lottie and other children with life limiting conditions. Although Lottie's seizures stopped, the disturbed nights continued. We would often have four or five nights a week when she fancied being wide awake for 3 or 4 hours from 1 or 2 in the morning. In order that we could guarantee one decent night's sleep a week, Lottie stayed at the Hospice under its respite care programme. An enormous relief!
I had signed up to run the Royal Parks run in October for the Hospice, but a bout of viral hepatitis put paid to that. Instead, I'm running the Adidas Half Marathon at Silverstone on Sunday 6 March in aid of the Hospice. It is a wonderful charity, giving support to people when they really need it.
