Story
In April 2017, Sue and I decided to undertake our biggest challenge to date by walking the South West Coast Path (in sections) from Minehead to Poole (630 miles!). The SWCP is the longest of England’s National Trails and has over 115,000 feet of ascent and descent - the equivalent of scaling Mount Everest four times!
Four and a half years later, we are delighted to say that we are planning to walk our final section at the beginning of October 2021.
We have walked over high cliffs of jagged rock, around dramatic headlands, through steep coastal valleys and around estuaries teeming with bird life. We have crossed farmland, golf courses and military firing ranges, walked gentle stretches of gorse covered high moorland and on down to lovely beaches through miles of sand dunes, ancient fishing ports, bustling resorts and beautiful seaside villages - all done in blistering heat, gales, hail or pouring rain!
There have been wild, remote sections and ancient woodland full of moss covered trees with swathes of bluebells and fragrant sections teeming with wild garlic. So much of our lands’ history can be seen in hidden churches, magnificent castles, the chimneys of the old Cornish tin mines and the remnants of WW2 coastal defences.
We’ve seen colonies of seals sunning themselves far below on stony beaches and watched birds of prey hovering overhead, hearing only the buzzing of bees and the sound of the sea washing up on shingle beaches. Sadly there has been a great amount of coastal erosion and therefore many diversions.
People from all around the world walk this path - lovely to chat to for just a few moments - occasionally and heroically some even attempt the whole path in one go. Every day the walk is different and gives a unique perspective of our beautiful coastline that can only be experienced by putting one foot in front of the other - again and again and again. It’s a truly life changing experience - go for it!
In celebration of what we feel is a massive achievement, we would like to raise money for charity. We have chosen Alzheimer’s Research UK because everyone knows somebody who has been affected by Alzheimer’s or Dementia which is such a cruel disease, not only for the people affected but also their families. Alzheimer’s Research UK’s mission is to bring about the first life changing dementia treatment by 2025.
