Story
In 2018 my mum was diagnosed with a leukaemia and following chemotherapy another, rarer cancer called myelofibrosis. She was unable to leave the Beatson Cancer Hospital for five months whilst they treated her as she had no immunity and was in danger of getting an infection. After months of chemotherapy, it became clear she needed a bone marrow transplant to have any chance of surviving. After not matching with either of her brothers, the doctors went on to the international bone marrow register run by The Anthony Nolan Charity to try find someone who matched her. Luckily she was matched to an anonymous 20 year old woman in Germany who donated her bone marrow and it was given to my mum. The transplant was a success, and she was able to leave hospital. Though she lives with constant side effects of the transplant, she wouldn’t still be here without the work of Anthony Nolan and the selfless donation of the anonymous donor.
It costs £40 to add a single person on to the register.
Every day, Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with a blood cancer or blood disorder. We do this by matching incredible individuals willing to donate their stem cells to people who desperately need a lifesaving transplant. We also carry out cutting edge scientific research, fund specialist post-transplant nurses and support patients and their families through the transplant process and beyond. We won’t stop until we save the lives of everyone who needs a stem cell transplant. Every penny you donate brings us closer to that day.
