On the 17th of August I will be attempting to climb Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike and Snowden within 24 hours in memory of a friend called Archie Brocklebank, and to raise money and awareness for Student Minds, the UK’s student mental health charity.
For many people, going to university is their first time living independently away from established networks of family support. In adjusting to the student lifestyle, many people struggle to maintain healthy day-to-day routines and experience academic, social and financial pressures. Sadly, roughly a third of students report psychological distress during these formative years (Bewick, 2008). Experiencing poor mental health whilst at university can contribute to decreased performance and interpersonal problems(ACHA, 2007). Tragically, in recent years there has been an increase in the number of student deaths by suicide (IPPR, 2017).
Student Mind's objective is to empower students and members of the university community to develop the knowledge, confidence and skills to look after their own mental health, support others and create change. They train students and staff in universities across the UK to deliver student-led peer support interventions as well as research-driven campaigns and workshops. By working collaboratively across sectors, they share best practice and ensure that the student voice influences decisions about student mental health.
