This fundraiser is to raise money to go towards communities in Tanzania as part of the Raleigh International Charity (ICS). I'll be heading to Tanzania in September this year for 3 months to help local communities, and to encourage sustainable development.
The ICS scheme has helped hundreds of communities worldwide, Raleigh (the particular charity I'm working with) has been running for over 30 years to help young people in developing countries find their voice.
To best explain the type of work we'll be doing, I'll provide an example we were given about a project a few years ago. The village the volunteers were staying in had no bakery, so residents were forced to pay for a weekly bus into the next village to buy their bread. This cost them a significant amount of money each week, money they couldn't spare. The ICS Livelihoods program provided the knowledge, the start-up money and man power to create a bakery within the village. This meant that a local family now had a business they could live off of, and that locals were no longer wasting money on the weekly bus journeys. The money saved allowed them to send their children to school twice a week, allowing them far greater opportunities than those they previously faced. Such a small input can have life-changing effects, and using the skills young people have to expand horizons is exactly what the ICS is about.
The £800 is just a fraction of the overall cost, the majority is funded via the government who pay for all of the travel and expenses. The £800 is set to provide fundraising experience for participants, but also to go towards the communities we stay in. Each member is placed in a host family within their community alongside a fellow Tanzanian volunteer. The money we raise is used to help these communities as a thank you for their hospitality. My minimum is £800, I'm hoping to smash that target so I can provide as much as possible!
