Story
Every 14 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with blood
cancer. For many, a stem cell transplant is their last chance of survival.
Anthony Nolan is a pioneering charity that makes lifesaving connections between
patients affected by blood cancer and blood disorders and incredible strangers
ready to donate their stem cells. By donating, every £1 is split as follows:
- 77p goes towards helping to provide lifesaving transplants. This includes recruiting donors to Anthony Nolan’s register, tissue typing them and searching for matches
- 8p goes towards researching ways to make transplants more successful. The charity’s expertise helps it make breakthrough discoveries that will save more lives
- 6p goes towards education and awareness programmes to bring blood cancer to everyone’s attention, including projects at school and universities
- 1p goes towards governance

I’ve chosen this charity because Anthony Nolan’s incredible
work has saved millions of lives. A stem cell transplant can replace a damaged immune system in a person with blood cancer or blood disease, but only if the donor’s tissue type matches, and for many, can be their last chance of life. Anthony Nolan works with hospitals and donor registries around the world to find matching donors for patients, wherever they are. However, Anthony Nolan urgently needs more people to join its register to provide more matches and save more lives. As a charity, it needs more funds to increase its lifesaving
work by expanding the donor register, cord blood bank and pioneering further research.
Personal note – stem cell register
Anthony Nolan is still in great need 16–30-year-old stem
cell donors, especially from ethnically diverse backgrounds. If you would like to join myself (I have personally been on the register for over a decade) and many others by signing up to the register, which takes two minutes, then please click here.
