Corruption touches all of us. Many think it doesn’t happen here in the UK, yet there are multiple examples of corrupt regimes, companies and political decision makers using their positions to further their own interest rather than that of the UK public. Moreover, £100billion is laundered through the UK every year, enabled by our banks, law firms, estate agents, art dealers and many otherwise legitimate services. This is money stolen by the powerful from economies around the world, perpetuating inequality and driving often already poor and vulnerable people into deeper poverty and violent conflict.
More than £400 billion is lost each year to corruption in healthcare alone. This is more than enough to pay for access to healthcare for all who need it, everywhere in the world - and is more vital than ever right now as the world struggles to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Both Naomi and I work for Transparency International UK (TI-UK) whose vision is for a world free from corruption. Together with our partners and supporters across an array of industries, professions and communities TI-UK has worked for 26 years to empower countries, institutions, the private sector and civil society to take steps to prevent corruption in politics, health care, business, defence and security.
This week we are both running 26km to raise money for Transparency International UK’s vital work. Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page and supporting us!
