Grandad
When I was in Middle School I remember studying WWII. Part of the assignment was to interview a veteran of the war. I went and spent some time with Grandad and I was hooked. He is the reason I am so interested in WWII and I could sit for hours listening to him tell stories.
On 2nd April 1943, at the age of 17, Grandad received a letter from The Royal Navy and Royal Marine Combined Recruiting Centre informing him that he had been successful in his application to join the Royal Navy. He was told to report two weeks later to Skegness for training. During his time in the Navy he served on HMS Cumberland, travelling to Trincomalee, Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka) in 1945.
Following the war, Grandad joined Bedfordshire Police but was forced to retire due to health reasons. Not content with this he signed up to join the Special Constabulary where he served for 32 years. Again Grandad's influence rubbed off on me and is part of the reason why I joined Bedfordshire Police myself.
On 10th December 2016, I said goodbye to a man who has had a profound influence on my life. Grandad loved his family, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and despite leaving a big hole, his life will live on through them.
Grandad's Race
For many years and right up to his death, Grandad was an active member of the Royal British Legion and it is in his honour I am seeking to raise money for them. Initially, I plan on running the London Landmarks Half Marathon on 25th March 2018 and then depending how the fund raising goes, take on a bigger fund raising challenge and compete in the big one - the London Marathon, in 2019.
Thank you for your time and donation.
For you Grandad...
