Story
In November 2018, following three bouts of sepsis which resulted in the formation of a cyst on his spine, our Dad (Tata) Roman underwent emergency spinal surgery. This left him with significantly impaired mobility and is currently wheelchair-bound.
Having spent four months at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, he was referred to the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital for intensive rehabilitation, including physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and adapted gym-based activities - where he was introduced to the exciting and liberating world of wheelchair sports.
The opportunity for Tata to take part in sports such as wheelchair tennis, rugby, basketball and handcycling, which were supported by WheelPower, played an instrumental role in his recovery - both physically and mentally.
Our Tata's illness and the impact that it has had on our family has really made us reflect on how precious being fully able-bodied is. With no previous interest (or aptitude) in long-distance running, we want to challenge ourselves to run a Half Marathon - running for those who otherwise cannot.
Please help us in our goal to raise as much money as possible towards this wonderful yet relatively unknown charity, and to help spread the availability of wheelchair sports for those who can truly benefit from them - just like our Tata has.
