Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.  Apologies for the scary picture on the left!

I still can’t quite believe that I’m going to cycle 300 miles from London to Paris over 4 days in June.  Before starting to train for this journey my cycling history started and finished with my five-minute ride to and from Haywards Heath station for my commute to London.

I am proud to be able to undertake this endurance test on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society.  The Society provides much needed and valuable support for Dementia sufferers and their carers.  Dementia is a terrible disorder that silently but surely attacks the quality of life of those unfortunate enough to be affected by it.  To learn more about Dementia from those more qualified to speak about it than me I recommend that you visit www.alzheimers.org.uk.  My recent personal experience of Dementia had quite an affect on me and immediately inspired me to do my bit to support the Society.

During my first proper practice ride in early February I learned a number of hard lessons.  First of all being on a saddle for more than ten minutes can be very painful.  Secondly cycling 75 miles in one day is far from easy (it took me long enough to build up to that in one weekend), but to do it for four days in a row will take a minor miracle.

Fortunately I’ve been able to invest in plenty of padding to overcome the saddle soreness.  Unfortunately only lots and lots and lots and lots of time pushing pedals over the months has given me what I hope is the necessary endurance to get from London to the Eiffel Tower.  The seemingly never ending English winter (the snow in April, what was that all about!) and the spring/summer rain has made the training extremely challenging on more occasions than I care to remember.

Please dig deep and sponsor me on this website.  Your support will make a real difference to those that the Alzheimer's Society is able to support with your contribution. Support received to date has meant so much to me; it has kept me focused during my many painful training sessions over the months and it will keep me focused during those particularly challenging moments in the event itself.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Alzheimer's Society will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!  £1 per mile would be £300, 10p a mile would be £30.  Even 5p a mile would be a worthwhile £15.

I can personally vouch for using this site as an effective way to provide sponsorship.  However if you are not comfortable with sponsoring me online I am very happy to accept cheques or cash instead; please let me know as soon as you can if you would like to sponsor me this way.

Many many thanks for your support.

Best wishes,

John
